Derby isn’t going to be seeing World Cup football come to Pride Park, as our application to be a host city for 2018 was turned down on Wednesday.

Leicester and Hull also missed out with Sunderland, London, Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle/Gateshead, Bristol, Plymouth, Liverpool and Milton Keynes all successful.

“England’s fortunate to have so many good stadia and I would like to congratulate all of the applicant host cities for the seven months of really hard work they have put in.

We have chosen cities which present the lowest possible risk to FIFA and it’s FIFA who will make the final decision.

There will also be a lot of disappointed football fans around the country, I understand that – and if I was a fan of theirs I would be just as disappointed.”

Lord Mawhinney was speaking at a press conference to announce the successful applicants.

I’m obviously disappointed that we’ve missed out but I’m not really surprised to tell the truth. Now we just wait to see if England will host the World Cup?
