With pre-season matches running out, and with them the chance to improve match fitness, Rob Hulse is facing a race against time to be fit for the start of the season.

A nagging groin injury has been troubling Hulse and he has now undergone minor surgery to clear this up.

“It was a 10-minute procedure just to release some of the tightness in his groin.”

Nigel Clough was talking to the Evening Telegraph.

The striker, who scored 18 goals last season, hasn’t featured in any pre-season friendlies yet and with Hulse to sit out the matches with Exeter, Notts County and Stoke his chances of being fit for the Championship opener with Peterborough on August 8 (Saturday) look slim.

Chris Porter and Paul Green are expected to return for the match with Exeter on Saturday however.
