Clough Happy But Not Carried Away

Nigel Clough picked up his first win as Derby boss with the 2-1 win over Coventry at Pride Park on Saturday. As pleased as he was with this win, he is refusing to get carried away.

‘This is a terrific result for us but it is important to stress that it is only a very small step forward.

‘The first-half performance was magnificent. With slightly better finishing and that elusive bit of luck we would have been out of sight.

‘A third goal would have killed the game off and we could have got it at any point in the first half.

‘At 2-0 it is lovely but it is a dangerous scoreline because if they get a goal back early after the break – like they did – it makes for a nervous second half.

‘It would have been lovely to win the game comfortably by 3-0 or 4-0, which we could have done in the first half, but the fact that we came through it together shows that there is real character in the squad.’

Clough is also expecting further activity before Monday’s 5pm transfer deadline, both in and out of the club.

‘There is a possibility of one or two going out and maybe one coming in.

‘Anyone coming in would be on loan but we can also still do that after February 9 when the window for loan deals opens again.’

Clough was talking after the match.
