Despite our heavy defeat at Burnley on Saturday Paul Jewell has said that he saw enough from new Derby signings Luke Varney and James Tomkins to prove they will be a hit.

‘I thought Varney did well for us and I think he will be a good player for us, he gives us some pace.

‘I thought he showed a great aptitude and he kept going.’

On Tomkins he added.

‘It was difficult for the young lad. He did OK but, obviously, he was shell-shocked after 23 minutes but at least we showed a bit of character and guts in the second half.’

Jewell was talking to the Evening Telegraph.

Varney will sign a contract in January for a fee that could rise to £1.5m, but he wont be available for our Carling Cup match with Stoke tomorrow, Tomkins however will be able to feature if selected.
