Stead – Do the Rams have a deal Mr Keane

The saga involving the Rams and Sunderland and the transfer of Lewin Nyatanga and Jon Stead has come one step closer, with the clubs talking of a deal.

Derby County boss Billy Davies says he has begun negotiations regarding a swap deal involving Rams defender and the Sunderland striker.
Stead has been in fine form during a loan spell with the Rams, while Welsh international Nyatanga has impressed during a similar spell at the Stadium of Light.

Davies said he hopes an accord can be struck, but until then Nyatanga will be a Rams player:
‘Possibilities are being discussed.
‘Lewin is back with us, as is Lionel Ainsworth after his loan at Bournemouth, and they are now part of the squad again and will be treated as part of the squad.
‘They have to get their heads down and work hard to force themselves into the team.
‘They are Derby County players until things change and so it will be business as usual for them and everyone else.’

Sunderland boss Roy Keane says he wants to do a deal for Nyatanga, and he hopes to come to an agreement with Derby in the near future and has expressed regret at not playing the 18-year-old in his preferred position in his time at the Stadium of Light. He said: “We do have an interest in Lewin. He did very well for us during his time here and I’m on a bit of a guilt trip at the moment that he only got the one game at centre-half.
‘It’s not easy for a youngster to come to a big club like this, where expectations are high and the crowd are demanding, and perform to your very best – especially when you are not playing in the position you feel most comfortable in.
‘Lewin played centre-half against Leicester – he finally got his chance there – and he looked good.’
The signs look good for a transfer swap and Stead, who has performed well at Pride Park, hopes to make the move permanent.
