Derby’s pre-season tour of the South West ended on Saturday with a 3-1 win at Exeter.

Paul Green, back from his latest injury, gave us the lead but Exeter were soon level when Richard Logan headed home. Stephen Davies continued his impressive pre-season goalscoring form as he came off the bench to score before setting up Green for his second.

Nigel Clough has been impressed with Davies, after his impressive performance again, and has challenged him to force his way into the first team as a starter.

“He made an impact straight away and he has done that a couple of times in pre-season.

The next challenge for him now is to do that from the start, because he has all the ability and attributes to be a Championship-and-above player but he has got to start putting 90 minutes together week in, week out.

If he does that, he will be getting a starting shirt rather than coming off the bench.”

Chris Porter, back from injury, played for an hour to give Clough a welcome boost with the new season less than two weeks away!

“It’s nice to have him back in the team.

It is difficult for Chris because he has been out for a while but it will be good mentally for him to get through that hour with no problem from his hip.”

Clough was talking to the Evening Telegraph.
