As reported on Vital Derby on Thursday, as unlikely as it might have seemed at the time, Stephen Bywater is set for a shock move to Tottenham. Paul Jewell has admitted that this is likely, and it is a move that the goalkeeper wants, with it also being a good move for Derby.

‘Stephen is very keen to go to Spurs which is fully understandable.

‘I would have liked to have kept him but the move is appealing to him and it will be done over the next few days.

‘We got some money from Ipswich Town for his loan (in 2007/08) and he is in the final year of his contract.

‘Stephen is very keen to go there and we wish him well.’

Jewell was talking to the official website.

The surprise move to North London is expected to happen in the next couple of days after the 27-year-old undergoes a medical.

Jewell will then be seeking to get a goalkeeper in on loan as Lewis Price is currently injured, and that leaves only youth and inexperience as backup from Roy Carroll.

  • What is your take on him, he seems to have struggled wherever he has gone since signing for west ham. how did he play for you guys?

  • He’s never reached the heights that people thought he would as a youngster with West Ham has he, but he’s been ok with us, but its strange that he’s our third choice, Ipswich didn’t want him yet Spurs do. Is there anyone on your coaching set-up with Derby, or maybe West Ham connections that knows of Bywater?

  • Posisbly the most bizarre transfer of the close season, replace one time England first choice with our cast-offs. Having said that he’s a decent keeper (not that you could tell last season behind our ‘defence’), good shot stopper and commands his area well when playing consistantly, shame to see him go but Carroll will be first choice so time to move on. At worst he’ll give you a laugh if he ever appears on tv but after the Goals on Sunday nightmare last season the chances of that happening can’t be high!

  • It surprises as here is no obvious bywater/spurs connection, where there ever any rumours of his instant fame when signing for west ham going to his head, he certainly has fallen well short of his expectations…

  • Someone at Spurs clearly rates him don’t they. For your sake you would hope they were right, but I don’t think he will get much of a look in will he? If any?
