The Rams have agreed a £3million deal for Sheffield United centre-back Claude Davis, which will be completed when the player passes a medical and secures a new work permit. Davies

The 28-year-old Trinidad & Tobago international has agreed a four-year contract with the Rams. The defender worked previously with Rams boss Billy Davies at Preston North End.

Davis moved to England in the summer of 2003 and signed for Preston initially on loan for the 2003-04 season, before concluding a permanent deal at Deepdale in March 2004. Davis established himself as the mainstay of the Preston defence, and swept the board at the club’s Player of the Season awards, named both the Player’s Player and fans Player of the Season, as Preston reached the play-offs.

He moved to Bramall Lane three years later in a £2.5million deal, but struggled with a knee injury early. He played in 21 Premier League games for United last season, as the Blades slipped straight back down to the Championship.

Rams boss Davies told the club’s official website: ‘We are delighted to be close to signing a player I know very well, having worked with him in the past.
‘Claude can grow in stature and experience with us and can play a very crucial role in Derby County’s defensive unit this coming season.’
