Savage heading to Pride Park

The Rams look set to sign Robbie Savage from Blackburn after they agreed a fee for the Welshman.

Savage has struggled to keep a spot in the starting eleven this season at Ewood Park and recently admitted he was looking to leave the club for regular first team football.

Sunderland made a bid for Savage last week and Wigan were also understood to be interested, but the Lancashire club have rejected their bids.

But it now appears that Derby has won the race for his signature, and Paul Jewell will be hoping to tie up the transfer as quickly as possible to strengthen the squad before Saturday`s clash against his former club Wigan Athletic.

The 33-year-old midfielder will meet Rams officials later today to discuss terms.

Jewell sees Savage’s experience and battling qualities as vital for the Pride Park side as they fight to stay in the Premier League

Wrexham-born Savage was a trainee at Manchester United before moving to Crewe Alexandra, and he made his name at Leicester City with five seasons in the Premier League from 1997 to 2002.

Savage joined Birmingham City, when the Foxes’ were relegation, before joining Blackburn in January 2005 for £3m.

He has made 465 appearances in his career scoring 34 goals, including 17 appearances for Rovers this season. He has also won 39 caps for Wales.
