Johnny Russell has backed George Thorne to come back from the ACL injury that he suffered in pre-season and that could see the young midfielder miss nine months of the season.

After a protracted transfer chase Thorne eventually completed his move from West Bromwich Albion but had to leave the pitch inside the first twenty minutes of the 2-0 friendly defeat to Zenit St Petersburg in Austria only days later. The Rams initially played down any injury worries but after Thorne travelled back to the UK the full extent of the injury was revealed and he underwent surgery late last week. Talking to the Derby Evening Telegraph about the injury Russell said:

“The club worked so hard to get him in and he has only been here a week and now he has been ruled out for the majority of the season. He was a vital part of what we did last season and we were looking forward to him being with us again. But he is a positive guy. He will work as hard as he can to get back as soon as he can.”
