Rubbish Again But Early Penalty Didn’t Help

After we slipped to another away defeat Paul Jewell admitted that we had been “rubbish” again, but was more critical of the first minute penalty award against Derby in the 3-0 defeat at Wolves.

‘I think it is a terrible decision to be perfectly honest. Even their players were saying it wasn’t a penalty. It is just the kind of start you don’t need.

‘If it has hit his hand, then there is no intent. But we haven’t had too many good refereeing decisions this season.’

Darren Powell was the man adjudged to have handled and that penalty gave Wolves the chance to take the lead, which they did and they didn’t look back after.

Chasing matches has been what has cost us most of all so far this season, and when you are doing this you are always vulnerable. Jewell wasn’t happy with the performance again but felt we showed more spirit and were more committed than we had been recently.

‘All we can do is just keep going and hope it turns around for us.

‘I thought we were the better team after the penalty for half an hour and we should have scored before we conceded the second goal. That meant we were then chasing the game, but that has been our Achilles heel all season.

‘For the last three away matches we have been rubbish, there is no doubt about that.

‘We have lost 3-0 but at least we have shown some gumption. We competed and the spirit was there. We just conceded goals at bad times.’

Jewell was talking to the Evening Telegraph.
