Gary Rowett says it was the right time to let Will Hughes to leave the club following confirmation of his move to Watford last week.

Hughes moved to Vicarage Road for an undisclosed fee quoted in the Derby Evening Telegraph as £5m rising to £9m with add-ons plus a 15% sell-on fee. The size of the fee raised a few eyebrows with the amounts being reported falling short of the figures bandied about in the last few transfer windows but Rowett believes it was the right deal to make telling the DET:

‘In Will’s case it was very simple once I had spoken to him. He felt as though he needed a new challenge, he felt as though it was a great opportunity for him. I felt it was a reasonable opportunity for both parties but knowing that Will was excited about it and wanted to make it happen, for me sometimes it is difficult to stand in a player’s way. We felt as a club that, yes, maybe the initial fee didn’t look as much as some of the numbers touted around for Will a couple of years ago but ultimately that’s where we felt it was and we managed to get quite a few things in there that should Will go on and do very well then we would also get rewarded and compensated.”
