Rams transfer window news

Paul Jewell has been busy on the last day of the 2008 January transfer window, and he has bolstered the beleaguer Rams defense by signing defender Alan Stubbs from Everton on an 18-month contract.

Jewell had been searching to strengthen his back four and has turned to the experienced 36-year-old who has also played for Bolton Wanderers, Celtic and Sunderland.

The Rams boss was delighted to have secured the defender. He said: “It’s a terrific capture for us.
‘Stubbsy is a first class pro and someone who has been there, seen it and done it.

‘I’m delighted to have him on board and believe he will add experience and steel to our backline.
‘He will train with us on Friday and is very much in contention for a place in the team on Saturday.’

Stubbs, who has made a dozen appearances for Everton this season, completed the switch this afternoon.

On a busy morning, the Rams also completed the signing of goalkeeper Roy Carroll in a deal until the end of the season.

The 30-year-old trained with his team mates this morning and he is in contention to start against Birmingham City on Saturday.

While Carroll, joins the Rams, Stephen Bywater, the keeper who helped the club win promotion to the Premier League, is set to join Ipswich Town on loan until the end of the season.

The Championship side have agreed a deal to sign Bywater on loan until the end of the season, with a view to a permanent switch to Portman Road in the summer.
The 26-year-old former Rochdale and West ham United shot-stopper moved to Pride Park at the beginning of last season and made 62 appearances for the Rams, but he has not featured in Paul Jewell’s plans since before Christmas.

Ipswich Town boss Jim Magilton told Town`s official website: “Stephen’s a young, ambitious keeper who knows what’s needed to win promotion from this division,

‘We’re delighted to have him with us and he’ll stay here on loan with a view to making it a permanent move in the summer.’

Magilton had been keen to sign a new keeper after allowing Neil Alexander to move to Rangers earlier this week.
