A Derby XI went down 2-0 to Crewe Alexander on Wednesday evening, two second-half goals saw the Rams go down in their pre-season friendly. On target for the Railwaymen was Mark Carrington on 53 minutes and Julien Baudet on 70 minutes.

The Rams had chances but couldn`t find the net; the closest they came was from youngster Paris Simmons who hit a post late on. Another worrying side for Billy Davies side was the sight of Michael Johnson hobble off in the second half.

The Rams did have a strong line-up, made up of players who hadn’t featured heavily in the Brian Clough Trophy victory over Nottingham Forest. Steve Howard and Jon Macken were paired up front, David Jones in the middle of the park and Tye Mears and Dean Leacock at the back. But it was the home side that took their chances and deserved the victory.

A few of the media were surprised when the name of Jamie Mullen was named in the Rams starting line-up. The 19-year-old former Manchester United and England youth international looked to impress the Rams coaching staff and earn a contract for next season.
