Rams boss on the look out for defenders

Rams boss Paul Jewell says he is desperate to strengthen his defence, and this in most fans point of view is the most important area for the Rams.

They have conceded 46 goals so far this season in 21 games. The centre back position needs strengthening and Jewell is keen on bringing in Stephane Henchoz to Pride Park.

Rover`s defender Henchoz is well down the pecking order for places at Ewood Park under manager Mark Hughes, and he could be swayed by his former boss Jewell.

The 33-year-old played under Jewell at Wigan Athletic in the 2005/06 season before returning to Rovers, and the Derby manager is hoping he can persuade Hughes to release him on a free transfer.

Jewell has already signed a number of players in the transfer window but told BBC Radio Derby that the heart of the defence remains a priority.

‘We know central defence is an area where we’ve lacked quality,’ Jewell said.

‘Everyone has made mistakes But it’s proving very, very difficult to get a centre-half or two in. We’re trying to get the right ones but that has proved a stumbling block.’
