Only a week after signing a new contract at pride Park young Rams defender Lewin Nyatanga has joined Barnsley on a six-month loan deal to gain more first-team experience.

Nyatanga recently signed a new four-year deal but Billy Davies said he was happy for the 18-year-old to go out on loan.

A number of Championship clubs have been interested in the Welsh international who has chosen to return to Barnsley where he spent a couple of months last season.

Barnsley boss Simon Davey is delighted.
‘We have beaten a number of so-called bigger teams in the Championship and around Europe to get him,’ he said.

Spanish club Real Sociedad, now managed by former Fulham boss Chris Coleman, were also believed to be interested in Nyatanga. The central defender made 10 appearances for Barnsley last season, scoring once.

In other news former Rams defender Paul Boertien has signed a one-year deal with League One club Walsall. The 28-year-old was released by Derby at the end of last season, as was goalkeeper Steven Cann, who has been offered a deal at Rotherham United.
