Rams boss left fuming after loss

Rams boss Paul Jewell has defended his comments after the 2-0 defeat at Wigan, and believes the players will be in for a hard week on the training track at Moor Farm.

Jewell was left fuming after a poor performance from the Rams on Saturday, and to make matters worse it was against his former club, who he had coached for six-years. When asked about it at the press conference he let fly at the players.

‘Of course I take some responsibility. I’m the manager,’ snapped Jewell. ‘But we’re all in this together, yet at the end of the day it’s the managers and the coaches that get the sack, not the players.

‘So for anybody to say we don’t take responsibility is a nonsense statement. I take whole responsibility for it. But next week won’t be a nice place for the players to work. It’s going to be uncomfortable for them because they certainly made my life uncomfortable on the touchline.

‘I can’t defend what I saw. I’m not going to name players, but I’m not saying anything to you guys that I’ve not said to them. There’s no desire, no effort, a lack of determination, and that is totally unacceptable. Not all of them, but a lot of the players don’t deserve to be here.’

He continued with his barrage and he pointed out, these players either shape up in the closing 11 games of the season or they will be shipped out in the summer.

‘What I have found here at Derby is a similar scenario to when I first arrived at Wigan,’ added Jewell. ‘It was a team that was over-rated, with players who thought they were better than they were.

‘It took me a year to sort that out, and I’m sure it will be the same here. It’s embarrassing because Derby County deserves better than this. It’s a great football club. But we won’t win any game at any level playing like that, be it in the Third Division or the Premier League.’

When asked whether the players would thank him for his hammering, Jewell retorted: ‘I don’t care. Do you think it’s fair the players hammer me like that while I’m stood on the touchline?

‘I normally never slag players off, but the way they’ve gone out there, I can’t defend it.

‘People say you have to get the best out of players, that you have to do this and do that, well, that’s fine, but I’m sick of walking on eggshells. The team, individually and collectively, was disgraceful.’
