Rams boss on collision course

It`s been reported on radio Derby this morning that Rams boss Billy Davies will be sacked today when he meets new chairman Adam Pearson.

Pearson, who has been in the post for four weeks, was due to hold a clear-the-air meeting with Davies at 9am this morning. But after an outburst by Davies after Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat by Chelsea, in which he told the chairman and the board to open the cheque book and strengthen the squad in the January transfer window, it could be the end of the road for the fiery Scotsman.

Derby sit bottom of the Premier League with one win in 14 matches and are odds-on for an immediate return to the Championship, and Davies admits his current team are not good enough to stay up and has thrown down the gauntlet to Pearson, saying investment for six new players is needed.

Pearson has expressed surprise and disappointment at Davies’ comments.

‘It was disappointing, a very strange reaction, and I’m not quite sure why he has done that. I’m sure I will find out the reasons at the meeting,’ said Pearson.

‘We will have a private meeting, a mature meeting. I would rather all this was done in-house. Controversy is not my style of doing things.’

A report in a Sunday newspaper yesterday claimed a clause in his contract would see Davies pick up a £750,000 pay-off should the Rams part company with him.

It was also reported that former Wigan boss Paul Jewell was being lined up as manager should Derby still be in the bottom three at Christmas.

‘I am not willing to discuss the manager’s contract in public and I don’t know where the Paul Jewell story has come from,’ said Pearson.

The fans will have their own opinions on the matter but my opinion, for what it`s worth, is that Davies has been great for the Derby County Football Club and has brought success quicker than even the die hard supporters could have imagined. His success may in the end be his downfall.
