Derby were beaten 1-0 at Burton Albion on Thursday night in the Bass Charity Vase match.
A penalty from Shaun Harrad after only 15 minutes proved to be the match winner at the Pirelli Stadium, a match in which former Rams defender Marc Edworthy turned out for Burton.
The Rams fielded trialist strikers Mark Grocott, a 20-year-old who has played for Stoke, and Fraser McLaren, also 20-years-old who is with Berwick Rangers, along with winger Cambridge City winger Scott Nielson.
Nielson, who has already had a trial with the Rams, was thought to have been told by Nigel Clough that he wouldn’t be offered a contract, however the Rams boss decided to have another look.
