Stephen Pearson had seen a move to Birmingham fall through this summer, but speculation that he would have moved on before the end of the transfer window was rife. However he stayed, and he is ready to fight for his first-team place.

‘Nobody likes being left out of the team. It is very disappointing but the boys are working so hard.

‘I’ve been out for six weeks with a torn groin muscle, so I am just trying to get my fitness back. I am happy to stay here at Derby and work hard and do the best I can to get back in the side.

‘I have only just got my fitness back so, hopefully, I can get a few more games and get my match fitness up and fight for my place.’

Pearson was talking to the Evening Telegraph.

This is the kind of fighting spirit that you want to hear, and once the 25-year-old is fully over his groin injury, which he almost is, Paul Jewell should take this into consideration. Afterall Pearson is a Scottish international, and not a bad footballer is he!

Pearson of course scored the goal that got us into the Premier League via the play-offs some 15-months ago, but has rarely featured since and spent the closing months of last season on loan with Stoke.
