Owls head to Pride Park in FA Cup

The Rams will entertain Championship side Sheffield Wednesday at Pride Park in the third round of the FA Cup. The match will be played on the weekend of the 5th and 6th of January.

A good cup run could give the Rams the impetus to move away from the foot of the league but both boss Paul Jewell – a former Owls manager – and skipper Matt Oakley stressed after Saturday`s lose at Sunderland that Derby’s main task this season is Premier League survival rather than a good cup run. There should be a big crowd for the tie with Wednesday`s having a good following.

The Owls have struggled early in the Championship and their boss Brian Laws was disappointed when they lost 1-2 at Hillsborough to Colchester, a result that leaves them in 15th place in the Championship.

There are some familiar faces in the Wednesday side, with former Rams players Lee Grant, Deon Burton, Marcus Tudgay and on-loan defender Michael Johnson. All will hope to get one over their former club, although Johnson will not be allowed to play if he is on-loan.

The last time the two sides met in the FA Cup was in the sixth round in 1993.

It was classic in the first game a 3-3 draw at the Baseball Ground, John Sheridan put the visitors ahead from the spot, but Shane Nicholson levelled with a spectacular long-range free kick.

Paul Warhurst made it 2-1 for the Owls before Marco Gabbiadini equalised after the break.

The Rams hit the front when Paul Kitson headed home and it looked like Arthur Cox`s side would progress, but a goal six minutes from time by Warhurst sent the teams to Hillsborough for a replay.

Teams in the match were:
Derby County: M.Taylor; Patterson, Forsyth, Nicholson, Short, Pembridge, Williams, Kuhl, Kitson, Gabbiadini, Johnson. Subs: Goulooze, Comyn.

Sheffield Wednesday: Woods; Nisson, Worthington, Palmer, Harkes (Jemson, 80), Anderson, Wilson, Waddle, Warhurst, Bright, Sheridan (Hyde, 57)

In the replay it was Warhurst again who scored the only goal of the game to take the Owls into the semi-finals.

Teams for the replay were:
Sheffield Wednesday: Woods; Nilsson, Worthington, Palmer, King (Hirst, 75), Anderson, Wilson, Waddle, Warhurst, Bright, Sheridan. Other sub: Hyde.

Derby County: M. Taylor; Patterson (Comyn, 43), Coleman, Nicholson, Short, Pembridge, Hayward (Stallard, 76), Kuhl, Kitson, Gabbiadini, Johnson.
