Derby’s reserve side is expected to take a much more youthful approach next season, with the clubs strategy being to field an U21 side to help with the fast tracking of talented youth.

Adam Pearson has confirmed this is the approach that we are taking, with Derby being linked to several youngsters on short-term deals to see what they can offer. Up to three youngsters are expected to arrive, adding to plenty we already have.

“The manager (Nigel Clough) is creating an under-21 development team that will play in the reserve league.

“We are going to be signing two or three promising young players on short-term contracts.

“They are lads who have a chance and it is with a view to seeing how they progress in the development team.”

Pearson was talking to the Evening Telegraph.

If a club is able to bring through its own players through youth programs this is always going to save money, then if the players become stars this can generate money. Rather than having a squad of 30-40 senior professionals as we have this season, if we can reduce this to 20-25 senior professionals with 10-15 youngsters, who make up the reserve side these youngsters get to be our reserve side and gain some sort of experience and can then hopefully be fast tracked into the first team as planned?
