Millwall v Derby County Match Report

|

The Rams decline started with this poorly defended free kick, which initially seemed to go staright in the goal without anyone touching it.

The Rams fresh from their 2-0 win over Oldham Athletic in midweek didn’t continue their winning for in the first period of the Game.

An early Foul in the 7th minute gave Millwall a free kick on the left of the Rams defence an unconvincing flat ball in caused panic for the Rams back-line with the ball apparently going straight into the Rams goal after a swing at the ball from Williams of Millwall.

The Rams struggled with playing the ball out of defence throughout this next period and was a contributing factor in Millwall’s second goal. Carson and his back four tried to play the ball out of defence but again things went drastically wrong and a vicious shot from outside of the Rams penalty area, which appeared to be heading wide was diverted into his own goal by Tomori.

Derby continued to struggle until the half-time whistle with little troubling Archer in the Millwall goal. Derby then has conceded 6 goals in 135 minutes of football with little sign of any reply. Derby needs to get more goal threat into midfield and more service to lone striker Martyn Waghorn.

A change at half time saw Craig Forsyth come on for Rams debutant Scott Malone. The Rams started brightly in the second period and Martyn Waghorn thought he had scored but was ruled off-side.

Millwall capitolise from the Rams defensive mistakes

With Derby desperate for a spark, Frank Lampard threw on his remaining two substitutes. Martyn Waghorn gave way for David Nugent and Mason Bennett taking over from Florian Jozefzoon. The injection of attacking power paid off and in the 77th Minute an unstoppable drive from David Nnugent on the edge of the Millwall box was too hot for Archer and billowed in the back of the net.

Derby now had belief and were attacking with purpose and giving Millwall all sorts of problems at the back. Time was against the Rams but they stook to their task and Millwall had visions of letting a two goal lead slip for the second week in a row but it wasn’t to be as the three minutes of time added on ran out.

Two losses on the trot for Frank Lampard and things have to be tightened up at the back and the mistakes ironed out if they are to get their season up and running again,
