Tyrone Mears claims that family commitments mean a permanent move to Marseille is unlikely to happen this summer.

“It’s a difficult scenario for me because Marseille is a platform I want to be playing on – in the Champions League, Europe, definitely in the UEFA Cup, and fighting to win titles.

“The problem for me is that my family is based in England, so they can’t move out with me. I’ve spent a season away from my two children and it’s been really hard on them as well as on me.

“Obviously, Marseille have opened talks with me, but it’s going to be difficult for me to commit to three or four years outside of England.”

Mears was talking to Sky Sports News.

What the 27-year-old really means to say is he knows he isn’t good enough to play for Marseille so he doesn’t want to uproot his family to move to France knowing that he’ll not be there for very long before uprooting them again!

Quite how, or even why, Mears suddenly believes his has become a world-beater who could play for England and should be playing Champions League, “definitely” UEFA Cup football is beyond me. He got lucky with his move to Marseille, but clearly he hasn’t proven himself as he hasn’t played that often, he certainly hasn’t ever seriously proven himself to be a Premier League player, and no top side in England is going to take him on next season.
