Last time The Rams met The Iron in the League away

The last time the Rams played away at Scunthorpe United in the league was on Friday 20th March 1964 in Division Two. The home side fought back from two goals down to eventually run out 3-2 winners against Tim Ward`s side, at the Old Show Ground.

The Rams were ahead after only 45 seconds, Mike Cullen finding Gordon Hughes and the winger’s shot from 25-yards caught Jones well off his line.

It got better for the Rams and it was 2-0 in the 27th minute. It was Cullen again, who was the provider, his through ball caused confusion between Iron defender Jack Brownsword and the keeper and the ball fell kindly to Ian Buxton who fired home via the post.

With half-time approaching it should have been 3-0, but the goal was controversially ruled offside. Cullen played in Hughes; the winger cut in a pulled the ball back to Buxton, who scored – only for the referee to award an offside decision that baffled the Derby team.

After the break the Rams sat back and allowed the pace to drop Scunthorpe’s revival got under way after 56 minutes when Wilson hammered in a close-range shot from Sloan’s pass.

Four minutes later Brownsword gained the distinction of becoming the first full-back in the history of the Football League to score 50 goals when he scored from a penalty after Lawther had been brought down by Young.

The winner came eight minutes from time, Mason free-kick from his own half should have been cleared, but instead Lawther got possession and Reg Matthews could only palm the angled shot away and Keith Ellis was on hand to head home from close-range.

Only for on short period of about 10 minutes in the second half did Derby County look like getting back into the game. That spell came just after Scunthorpe had equalised. But the effort was not sustained and at the end they could have few complaints about their defeat.
