John Terry, cost cutting and transfers in and out

|

All the above have been well and truly covered over the last few days but what are the facts?

At 37 years of age are Derby County, or more to the point, Frank Lampard going to employ the former Chelsea Captain and friend John Terry? I very much doubt it. Whilst with Aston Villa last season JT was getting a whopping £60,000 per week, which is double what the Rams top earners received during last season.

Cost cutting is said to be the order for this coming season and Owner Mel Morris has already invested heavily on an untried manager, so risking a double whammy by bringing Terry to the club would seem unlikely. Terry, however, is reported to be willing to take a huge wage cut to join his friend at Derby County. How large that drop would be is speculation and pure guesswork at the moment but would need to be substantial to satisfy the wage-cutting exercise Morris has reportedly asked for and looks determined to carry out this season.

Derby has already started on reducing the wage bill with Chris Baird, Jason Shackell and Darren Bent all leaving the club at the end of last season. Loanees Kasey Palmer and Sam Winnall have returned to their parent club after loans to the Rams and Johnny Russell moving to the MLS with Kansas for a nominal fee.

Many more cost-cutting moves or loans are expected in the coming months and presumably, the budget for bringing in new players will depend on just how many players are sold or released.

I fully expect that last seasons club and league top scorer and golden boot winner Matej Vydra will need to be sold to allow for any movement in the transfer market and there have even been rumours of Curtis Davies moving, possibly with former manager Gary Rowett to Stoke City. This may leave a hole that John Terry may be needed to fill, but again I don’t think this will happen.

A great deal for Mr Lampard to do in the next couple of months and before that he will be going to the World Cup in Russia to give his views on the National team and others nations all striving for the ultimate football prize.
