Jewell: We Rode Our Luck

Paul Jewell admitted that Derby rode their luck in our 2-1 Carling Cup win over Leeds at Pride Park on Tuesday, but getting through to the Quarter-Finals was the priority and that was achieved.

Early goals from Tito Villa and Nathan Ellington put us in the driving seat and we looked on for a comfortable evening, but the League One side never let up with the woodwork and Roy Carroll coming to our rescue and in the end we were more than clinging on.

‘After 18 minutes it was one-way traffic and I was wondering how many goals we were going to score.

‘I thought I might be able to actually sit back and enjoy a game for once. Every time we went forward we looked like we were going to score.

‘But then, give Leeds credit, they absolutely dominated possession and scored a good goal and hit a post. They battered us for 70 minutes.

‘I don’t know whether we took a step back but the game totally transformed and sometimes as a manager you have to hold your hands up and say they played better than us.

‘They will feel aggrieved. We have been fortunate, no doubt, but sometimes you need that in football.

‘We rode our luck at times, that’s for sure, but we are in the hat for the next round and that is all that matters.’

Jewell was talking after the match.

The draw for the Quarter-Finals, a stage we have not reached since 1990, takes place on Saturday.
