Jewell Pleased To Be Proven Wrong!

When Paul Jewell first arrived at Derby he didn’t have much faith in Miles Addison, and didn’t see him as a first team player. His impact, and rise into a key first team member is something he is pleased to be wrong about.

‘Yes, it’s true I didn’t really fancy the lad when I first got here. He’s a shy, quiet type and I didn’t think he looked anything special.

‘Miles was like a lot of the young lads here. The atmosphere around the place had got to them and everybody was a bit flat.

‘He was bogged down playing centre-half in a reserve side that couldn’t win a game and I have to put my hands up and admit that it was quite a while before his appetite for work made him stand out.’

Addison kept plugging away, and his hard graft in training and willingness to learn soon caught Jewell’s eye and when he got the chance in midfield he took it, with the boss saying that he has been our man of the match in just about every match he has played this season!

The 19 year olds form has seen plenty of Premier League scouts come to watch him, and Jewell isn’t expecting it to be long before firm offers come in for the midfielder but doesn’t want to lose him and if we are back in the Premier League ourselves next season we have a much better chance of keeping him.

Addison scored his first goal for the club last Saturday in the 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday, having seen a goals unfairly ruled out against Forest a few weeks earlier, and he was delighted to put one over Jewell and the other coaches that had been giving him stick for his shooting, although he thought Rob Hulse was going to pinch his goal which could’ve seen him fuming!

‘The gaffer and the coaches had been giving me stick about my shooting and after having two perfectly good goals disallowed against Forest, I was starting to get a bit frustrated myself.

‘I thought Rob Hulse was going to get a touch as my shot went across the keeper and I’d have done something illegal if he’d taken that goal away from me.’

Addison has well and truly proven Jewell wrong, and all of us are very pleased about this!
