Paul Jewell refused to blame these the state of the Don Valley pitch and the weather conditions as factor’s for Derby’s 0-0 draw with Rotherham on Saturday. Although he did concede that they didn’t help, so in a sense he has!

‘You can’t judge too much from the result and I didn’t realise how bad the pitch was until I stood on it and had a look.

‘I don’t want to make too many excuses but you could see by the quality of the game that the pitch and conditions were a shocker.

‘The 90-minute run-out was good for the players to get under their belt but the quality wasn’t there. But despite that, I am happy with the progress we have made.’

Jewell was talking to the official website.

The most important part of what Jewell has said is the fact that several players managed to get a full ninety minutes under their belt, which will be highly beneficial when the season comes around, which afterall is when it really counts!
