Football managers the length and the breadth of the globe fear the dreaded vote of confidence from the chairman, and this is what Paul Jewell has received from Derby’s chairman of football Adam Pearson.

‘We know we are in a battle and I have every confidence in Paul, as has club chairman Andy Appleby, and the three of us together are quite resolute in our belief it can be turned round.

‘It is very early in the season and I completely understand the disquiet and criticism coming our way because it is deserved, but we will take it on the chin and get on with it.

‘I do not know a chairman in the land who is incompetent enough to put a timescale on managers, it has always been a media thing.

‘To do it would be unfair on everybody.

‘We are not underestimating the disquiet, we know the supporters are extremely unhappy. All I can say is that we are working as hard as we can to turn it round.

‘We are going to have to be big boys, take the stick and sort it out.

‘We have always had full confidence in Paul Jewell and that has not changed in the slightest.’

Pearson was talking to the Evening Telegraph.

Jewell could be sacked if we don’t beat Barnsley on Saturday according to some reports, but Pearson insists that he retains faith in Jewell and no timescale has been put on his having to turn the situation at Derby around, a situation that has seen him fail to record a league win since taking over in November 2007.

We must give Jewell some more time, but a month into the new season isn’t long enough. If things don’t improve by the end of September or mid October then a change will happen, as it would have needed to have happened by then, but that isn’t something to think about yet is it.
