Derby County completed the signing of Swiss defender Valentin Gjokaj on a two year contract at the back end of last week and he made his debut from the bench in the 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday on the opening day of the new season.

The 18-year-old defender looked solid whilst on trial in pre-season turning out a number of times for The Rams and impressed Nigel Clough enough to earn a deal at Pride Park. He will mainly feature in the new under-21 squad but will also provide cover at the back for the first-team after after a deal was agreed with his former club Lucerne and international clearance received.

Talking to the Derby Evening Telegraph shortly before the deal was done Clough said:

“Everything about him impressed us. He has shown a great attitude, We threw him in against Mansfield, Burton and Northampton, and he has competed and looked comfortable. He is another good young player we would like to put into our system.”
