After a long battle against illness, former Derby County chairman Lionel Pickering has passed away.

Mr Pickering made the majority of his fortune through free newspapers, and purchased the Rams in 1991, where he remained in charge until 2003.

Although his tenure ended sadly with the clubs debts mountaining, Pickering was chiefly responsible for some of the most notable achievements in recent years – most notably promotion to the Premiership in 1996, and the move to Pride Park Stadium the following years.

Vital Derby would like to thank Lionel for all he did for the club, and offer our condolences to his family.
