Duo look set for Derby move
The transfer window merry-go-round continues and Billy Davies appears to be on the verge of bringing in two new signings to Pride Park. They are Hull City talented centre forward Craig Fagan and Celtic midfielder Stephen Pearson.
The Hull City Chairman Adam Pearson announced yesterday that the club had reluctantly accepted the Rams £1million offer for the striker, and he will sign for the Pride Park side this week. The Rams have offered £750,000 for the 24-year-old, and City will receive a further £250,000 should Derby achieve promotion. The Tigers were reluctant to sell the striker as new Coach – former Rams boss – Phil Brown wanted to keep a strong squad, to climb up the league and clear of the relegation zone. But Fagan, who could leave for free in the summer when his contract runs out, wasn`t keen on extending it.
Pearson said: ‘Life goes on. We have to make a decision, and when a player has turned down three contract offers it’s fairly obvious he isn’t going to stay.’
Rams boss Davies dropped a big hint regarding the transfer in a post match interview following the FA Cup third round victory against Wrexham. He was asked was he surprised that Fagan didn`t play in the Tigers cup clash against Premier League side Middlesbrough and he was asked if we should read anything in it. Davis said: “I think you should, he is a young talented player and it`s nice to hear he didn`t play. We`ll have to see what happens in the next couple of days.”
Speculation over Fagan’s future has been rife over the last few weeks as the player turned in some of his best performances since joining the club, and his omission from yesterday’s squad – thus keeping him eligible to play in further FA Cup matches this season for any team he joins – was a big indication that he’d be moving on.
Fagan has scored 15 goals in 70 starts since joining in March 2005. He cost Hull around £125,000 from Colchester.
Another player who Davies is keen on signing is Celtic`s midfielder Pearson. He attended the Rams clash with Wrexham on Saturday and had talks with club officials and viewed the clubs facilities. The Celtic Park club have accepted the Rams bid of £800,000 and it is now up to the 24-year-old to agree terms. It`s believed Celtic have accepted bids from other clubs for the talented midfielders services, so the Rams will have to wait for his answer. Pearson, who worked with Davies during their time together at Motherwell, would be a great acquisition. Davies said: “We’re hoping we can bring Stephen here. We’ve agreed a fee with Celtic and he would be a valuable addition to our squad.’
Derby’s Championship rivals Norwich and Sunderland are thought to be the other clubs involved
