Brian Clough and Peter Taylor were at the helm when the Rams won the 1971-72, Division One League Championship. The Baseball ground was a fortress that season one losing once to Newcastle United 0-1, and the season also included a double over near neighbours Nottingham Forest, 2-0 at the City Ground and 4-0 at home. The Rams ended their season with a huge 1-0 victory at the Baseball Ground, John McGovern on target in front of 39,420 fans. The title was official won on May 8, 1972, with Clough away on holiday in Spain with his Derby side. Back home Leeds United and Liverpool failed to get the results necessary in their last games and the Rams clinched the title.
