Derby County v Leeds United match report

Frank Lampard looks on as his Derby County side are dismantled by Leeds United at Pride Park

An unmitigated disaster would be one description of Frank Lampard’s first match at Pride Park as manager, Yes they were playing Leeds United, who look a very good side this season and a decent bet for promotion under Marcelo Bielsa but the Rams were given a lesson in football as Frank Lampard looked on in disbelief as his side was dismantled before his eyes.

Leeds sporting their new away kit were up for the fight and took the game to Derby, who were without Curtis Davies in the centre of their defence. Derby backed off and failed to close down on many occasions across the defensive line and Klich exploited this to the full in the 6th minute to send a shot from outside the area past Carson for the opening goal.

Leeds looked the side most likely to take the points at this stage but the new look Rams side with Martyn Waghorn And Fikayo Tomori fought back and a free kick outside the penalty area to the Leeds United left-hand side was expertly struck home by Tom Lawrence to bring the scores level after 12 minutes.

Derby struggled from this point and Waghorn was left on his own up at the front of the Rams attack and with no service was probably wondering why he had left Ipswich Town

A goal from Roofe in the 21st minute proved to be the start of the slippery slope for Derby but they went in at the halftime break just 2-1 down and Lampard had his work cut out trying to salvage something from his first home game in charge. One change at the interval for Derby, Joe Ledley came off and he was replaced by Bradley Johnson. Ledley had looked slow and didn’t produce any meaningful passes during the first period. Johnson is a more combative sort of player and was presumably sent on to get among the Leeds midfielders and try to produce something going forward for the Rams.

Despite Leeds having the majority of play during the opening period of the second half, the Rams had to attack Leeds and try and get the equaliser but on the hour Leeds claimed their third goal, with Roofe scoring his second of the game.

Florian Jozefzoon came on for Harry Wilson in the  61st minute but the Dutchman could do little to drive the Rams forward. Leeds completed a sad day for Frank Lampard’s Rams as they struck their 4th goal in the 64th-minute, Alioski completing an excellent game and the scoring for him with a goal.

The Rams humiliation was complete and Lampard must now go away and look at what went wrong and try to put it right with Tuesday’s Caraboa Cup game at Boundary Park against Oldham Athletic and before next weekends trip to the Den and Millwall in the Championship.
