Derby County`s pre-season campaign came to an end with a 2-1 defeat to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim as the German`s prepared for their Champions League qualifier with a win.

Hoffenheim saw more of the ball in the opening stages in what was a cagey start to the match and Adam Szalai and Serge Gnabry both had efforts saved by Scott Carson as the half progressed. The Rams got into their rhythm a little more and gained some territory but didn`t trouble the German defence until Johnny Russell broke in behind the backline but Chris Martin`s effort from his pullback was blocked before reaching the goal.

Martin threatened in the second half as Derby looked more lively going forward but he lost the angle after attempting to round the keep and the ball was cleared from his cross. The visitors took the lead after an hour when Szalai`s shot was saved by Carson but Rupp followed to convert from close range but they handed The Rams an almost instant route back in the game when Russell was brought down in the area. Baumann saved Bradley Johnson`s penalty to preserve the lead though.

Both sides rang the changes as the game progressed and Derby were level with ten minutes to go when Matej Vydra ceased on a wayward backpass to slot home a neat finish but Hoffenheim were back in front only three minutes later when Wagner`s dummy beat two defenders and he curled home a superb finish from the edge of the area.
