Shaun Barker has put pen to paper on a new three and a half year deal that will keep him at Pride Park until the summer of 2014 as Nigel Clough looks for some stability at the heart of his Derby County side. The Nottingham born defender has made over fifty appearances since joining The Rams in the summer of 2009 from Blackpool and has become a favourite amongst Rams fans with his commitment and style of play. Speaking of his happiness at committing his future to Clough`s side he told the official website:

‘I’m delighted to commit my future to Derby County and I’m really excited about what the future holds. We’ve made great progress this season and I’m confident we can build on that during the second half of the campaign and beyond. I’ve had a great year and a half here and I’m delighted the club sees me as a big part of their plans moving forwards.”

Barker was praised by Clough for his attitude since coming to Pride Park and has been earmarked as a future captain once Robbie Savage hangs up his boots. His consistency, leadership and ability to play through injury were also talked up as Clough told the official website:

‘Since Shaun came here we’ve all seen he was the type of defender, and leader, that we were lacking. To come in, as a defender, and win the supporters’ player of the year award in his first year was a great achievement for him and he’s been excellent for us.”
